Sports and community activities

Rose Charities Sri Lanka has partnered with the Canadian International Development Agency (C.I.D.A) to create a peace building program for young people in Kalmunai, Sri Lanka which was torn apart by the tsunami and now the civil war.

Many families are still living in transitional camps and the teenagers are greatly at risk of being recruited into the war.

The program involves the whole community and helps them build a series of activities for young people. Sports - such as cricket and basketball, help build self respect, co-operation and the ability to work as a team.

The activities provide opportunities for adolescents to put aside their religious and ethnic differences and work and play together in a neutral environment.

There is a community centre, a basketball league, vocational training and youth counseling . Many of the activities are run by local volunteers and they are enthusiastically supported by the community and the children.
