Educational Support
Rose Charities remained in Sri Lanka after the emergency which followed the tsunami. Responding to the Sri Lankan community's request,
Rose Charities started an educational support program to help children whose education had been so dramatically interrupted.
Schooling stopped for many due to the destruction of their school, post traumatic stress, cramped conditions in the camps, lack of basic
materials (books etc), no electricity for many hours.
Over 90 local teachers volunteered to give extra time, the schools opened for longer and with financial support from Rose, this unprecedented
community effort allowed every high school student four months of intense tuition leading up to final exams.
This program continues today and includes a pre-school as well as classes for older children.
University Students
Although university education is free in Sri Lanka, many students who have been offered places cannot afford the cost of accommodation, subsistence,
books and materials.
University scholarships are now being offered through Rose Charities, who identify students whose families are in difficulty and pay for their
university education. To broaden the assistance we can give, student loans will shortly be offered to qualifying students.
At a personal level . . .
Nirmatha's family had lost virtually everything when the tsunami destroyed their home. All efforts since then by the family had been on finding
somewhere to live and enough to eat. Nirmatha's ambition to go to university, where she had been offered a place, seemed a very low priority and utterly
unattainable. Rose Charities was able to sponsor her and she is now persuing her qualification as an engineer on a three year degree course at Ampara
University.
To sponsor a student through university costs a total of just $600 Canandian for the three years of the degree. To help a student Click here
